Sebastião Salgado passed away
Sebastião Salgado, a Brazilian photographer, passed away today. I'm not that well-informed about the arts because this stuff usually goes way above my head, I know about him mostly because of his work on reforestation, funny enough, as this made waves some years ago.
One of his most famous works was the photos he took from the Serra Pelada gold mine in Brazil, in the 80s, some of which can be seen here. Funny enough, I only found out about this because, apparently, these photos were an inspiration for this Smashing Pumpkins music video:
And I just found out that another one of his photos was the cover of Casual Gods by Jerry Harrison, from Talking Heads.
The man has done a lot in his life, he was even a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in France. It will never not be weird to find his stuff out mostly as a byway of foreign media but, well, that's how the internet works, I guess.
